We’ve got a lot to talk about this week.

As promised, Karen’s Green Goddess recipe is included inside today. It is currently in the lead as my personal favorite, God rest Mary John’s soul.

Be careful what you ask for. After noting that feedback is the fuel by which the engine of this column runs, I got plenty this week, particularly about the Ben Hur movie. Many friends, including Howard, Ava, Barbara, Carolyn and Linda, have seen it and given their wholehearted endorsement to the quality of the production and the message. I will now have to see it in order for my come-uppance to be complete.

One of the best parts of my week was listening to my trainer, Ross, tell about his daughters, Cadence and Chloe, and their first day of school signs. The little darlings posted signs with everything from favorite foods - Cadence listed broccoli (but remember her dad is a personal trainer so she’s definitely a team player) and Chloe chose pizza - and many other options.

The girls are respectively fourth- and third-graders at Cain Elementary in Whitehouse. At 7 and 9, who would question whether they will grow up to be a marine biologist or a designer as their signs declared? Definitely not their grandma, Ronda. The funny thing about it is, their dad said, at almost 35, he may need his own sign to say what it is he wants to be when he grows up.

The good news is we all get to re-evaluate no matter how young or old we are, as life has many more options these days than just a few years back. How many personal trainers were around this place 20 years ago?

Now people work from home or the other side of the world thanks to many globe-shrinking technologies. The economy of intellectual capital is booming, so, even if we need to do something different every two or three years to keep things real, no other time has had so much opportunity.

After reading the signs the girls made I will have to check out their favorite songs, “Dear Future Husband” by Meghan Trainor and “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” by Selena Gomez.


1/2 cup sour cream

1 cup mayo

3 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 anchovy

1/3 cup chopped green onion

1/3 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

2 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon leaves

2 tablespoon chopped fresh chives

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions: Puree all ingredients together in a food processor until creamy and pale green. Cover and chill 8 hours.
