1 dead, 3 hurt in Jasper boating accident

JASPER, Texas (AP) - Authorities say one person has been killed and three hurt when their 24-foot bay boat hit a small island at Sam Rayburn Reservoir in East Texas.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department says the accident happened late Tuesday night just south of the Twin Dikes boat ramp.

Department spokesman Tom Harvey says the boat carried a man, a woman and two children. One youngster used a cellphone to summon help. Rescuers helped get the damaged vessel to shore.

Harvey says the man died in the accident. The woman was transported to a Beaumont hospital and was undergoing surgery. The two children were also hospitalized for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Harvey says reservoir water levels have been relatively high since spring rains.
