McALLEN, Texas (AP) — The Border Patrol says it has saved the lives of two men lost in the brush north of the U.S.-Mexico border, but a third was reported as brain dead in an area hospital.

The agency announced Monday that on Sunday evening its agents responded after one of the lost immigrants called the Brooks County Sheriff's Office. The third man was unresponsive when agents arrived. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Corpus Christi.

Immigrants who have entered the country illegally often get lost in the harsh ranchlands. It can take two days to hike around the Border Patrol highway checkpoint south of Falfurrias and they seldom carry enough water.

Last year the remains of 129 suspected immigrants were found in Brooks County.
