A Wood County resident was killed in an officer-involved shooting involving Wood County deputies Monday night, according to a news release from the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to a report that Gary Don Lafon, 56, was suicidal at his residence at 134 County Road 3955. According to the press release, deputies made multiple attempts to make contact with Lafon by phone and the vehicle loud speaker without success.

Deputies entered the residence about 11:30 p.m. Lafon pointed a firearm at the deputies, and shots were fired, and Lafon was hit by the gunfire, according to the press release.

The deputies were not injured in the exchange and have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Because it is a deputy-involved shooting, the Texas Rangers were notified and the Texas Ranger Crime Scene Investigation Team arrived about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, and began their investigation, assisted by the Wood County Sheriff's Office.
