A Whitehouse couple was arrested this week on an injury to a child charge after two 13-year-old children reported physical abuse on Sept. 13.

Mark and Cheryl Layne surrendered to authorities after warrants were issued for their arrests. Each had a bond of $75,000. They were booked into Smith County Jail and released after posting bond. Injury to a child is a third-degree felony, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

KYTX-CBS19 reported that Mark Layne is a 21-year veteran of the Tyler Police Department as a patrol officer, according to information provided by Tyler Police Department spokesman Don Martin. Mark Layne is on administrative leave.

On Sept. 13, the sheriff’s office responded to Whitehouse ISD after the children reported the abuse to the Whitehouse Police Department school resource officer. Child Protective Services responded and took custody of the children, the release stated.

Visible injuries were seen on two of the children after authorities searched the couple’s residence on Sept. 13, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
