GILMER — Uphsur Commissioners on Wednesday appointed Barbara Winchester as county clerk.
Commissioners also accepted the resignation of Brandy Lee, who stepped down to become county auditor last week.
The appointment of Ms. Winchester, a deputy in the clerk's office, is effective through Dec. 31, 2014. The office is up for election next year.
County Judge Dean Fowler, who administered the oath of office to the newly-appointed clerk after the court's vote, had recommended her appointment. He said she understood the filing system for the office.
He also said he had talked to several other deputies in the clerk's office who had worked there for some time, but they were not "interested at all" in the appointment.
After being sworn in, the new clerk said, "Thank you very much. You know you can't go wrong with a Winchester on your side."
