Socks being collected at Tyler Library for Gateway to Hope

The Tyler Public Library is celebrating the new release of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” by helping Dobby find socks for a good cause.

During the month of August, the library will be accepting new socks that will be donated to Gateway to Hope, a homeless day center operated by Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.

For each pair of socks donated, the donor will receive one raffle ticket to be entered in a drawing to win a Kindle Fire HD. The Dobby drawing will be held on Aug. 31.

Antique tractor and engine display show to take place Saturday

The Lone Star Antique Tractor and Engine Association Inc. will have an antique tractor and engine display show from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at their Tyler locations, 3509 Robertson Road and 13641 Highway 110 South.

The show is held to promote the upcoming tractor and engine show scheduled for Sept. 9 and 10 in Whitehouse.

The purpose of the association is to promote the collection, restoration, preservation and exhibition of classic farm tractors, machinery and equipment.


Women in Tyler planning Committee seeks nominees for 2017

The Women in Tyler Planning Committee is currently accepting nominations from the public for its 2017 nominees.

The 2017 Women in Tyler luncheon theme is “Women Who Make an Impact!” and nominations for the prestigious award must be sent by Monday to P.O. Box 1432, Tyler, TX, 75710.

Honorees will be announced in January and will be honored at the Annual Women in Tyler Luncheon on March 23 at the Rose Garden Center.

Women in Tyler was founded in 1999 as a way to celebrate Women’s History Month and to honor women who have contributed to the quality of life in our community.  Each year, a diverse planning committee has gathered to select women who are then honored at a celebratory luncheon held each March. This year marks the 18th anniversary of its founding.

Tyler Transit offering free rides to library

Through Aug. 31, children and teens wanting to go to the library can ride the bus for free.

Throughout the summer months, the library offers free programs to coincide with its annual Summer Reading Club.

Families wishing to take advantage of this offer will need to show a Tyler Public Library card to the Tyler Transit bus driver and state they are either traveling to or from the library.

Transit and transfer passes are free for children and teens up to age 18, only to and from the library. Adult passes are $1 each. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

At 201 S. College Ave., in downtown Tyler, the bus stop closest to the library is near the corner of South Broadway Avenue and West Elm Street at the south end of the Fair Parking Garage.

Conversational Spanish classes to be offered at Glass Recreation Center

The Tyler Parks and Recreation Department will offer a four-week introductory conversational Spanish class beginning Sept. 13 at the Glass Recreation Center, 501 W. 32nd St.

Speaking Spanish in everyday encounters and real life situations will be highlighted in the class. Lectures, class participation, homework and more will be featured in the class.

With a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Texas at Tyler, Iris Avila has taught beginner Spanish classes for seven years and will instruct the class.

Classes will be held on from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays. Participants must register by phone, mail or online by Sept. 3. The cost for the course is $50. There must be a minimum of seven pre-registered students for class to take place.

Upcoming golf tournament to benefit the Salvation Army of Tyler

The 6th Annual Tee Off for Toys Golf Tournament will take place Sept. 26 at Hideaway Lake Golf Course, 101 Hide-A-Way Lane Central, in Hideaway.

Hosted by the Tyler Professional Firefighter Association, participants will play in a four-player scramble that will benefit the Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree program.

Each player is asked to bring an unwrapped toy worth at least $10. Registration is available now online and will be open the day of the event at 9 a.m. A putting contest will take place at 9:30 a.m. and the tournament will start at 11 a.m.

Prizes will be given for first, second and third place winners. Those interested in sponsoring the event have until Aug. 30 and can send an email to CindyBell@uss.salvationarmy.org, or call 903-592-4361.

Sight.org presents Sight Night

Sight.org will present “The Joy of Sight” on Oct. 4 at Callynth Photography Studio, 117 E. Erwin St. The event will feature art by local artist, a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and live music.

All proceeds will be used to help Sight.org fulfill its mission to help provide sight to the blind in Togo, Africa.
