A 35-year-old Tyler man was arrested after police suspect he was driving while intoxicated and caused three wrecks.
Eugene Johnson II was charged with three counts of leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated with an open container, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, and evading arrest or detention, according to a Tyler Police Department news release.
He was being held on a $1,000 bond, according to jail records.
The arrest came after Tyler police got a call about 9 p.m. Thursday from a driver who was following a suspected drunken driver who had caused three wrecks, according to the news release.
Police caught up to the vehicle and attempted to pull the vehicle over at East Erwin Street outside of Loop 323.
The driver evaded officers by driving into the county and fleeing on foot into a wooded area. Officers chased the suspect and took him into custody.
No injuries were reported in the hit-and-run collisions.
Johnson has an extensive criminal history in Smith County dating back to 2008, according to judicial records.
