A Tyler man has been arrested after allegedly tying up, gagging and threatening his common-law wife and her children with a knife.
The man, identified as Ronnie Lee Rinehart, 34, came home to the Lodge Apartments, 2709 S. Broadway Ave., after work on the morning of Nov. 30 and was aggressive toward his 29-year-old common-law wife and her three children, according to police.
He took them to the back bedroom, tied and gagged them, and threatened them with a knife. The children are 6, 8 and 9, according to a Tyler Police Department news release.
The woman got out of the restraints and grabbed a knife. After a struggle, she stabbed Rinehart in the back, according to police.
She and the kids then ran from the apartment and called the police. Police responded at 11:30 a.m. Rinehart had fled in his wife’s vehicle before officers arrived, according to Tyler police.
He was found by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office north of Tyler and was taken into custody and sent to a hospital for treatment. He will be charged with aggravated kidnapping and remain in custody while being treated, the release stated.
Public records show that Rinehart has a lengthy criminal record.
He pleaded guilty to indecency with a child in 2004 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the 7th District Court. He received parole in 2014 and was released to Smith County in 2015, according to public data. His parole expired in August 2018. In 2003 he also pleaded guilty to a charge of arson and assault causing bodily injury to a family member.
Rinehart was arrested earlier this year on a possession of controlled substance charge of more than a gram, but less than 4. He bonded out in March, but was taken back into custody in June and released on Sept. 11.
