Man accused of threat to kill ex

A 36-year-old Tyler man has been arrested and charged after police say he threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and backed his vehicle into her car when she was inside.

Joshua Allen Cowart was charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest and detention and an outstanding parole warrant, according to a Tyler Police Department news release.

Police said shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday, they received a 911 call from a woman stating her ex-boyfriend followed her to work and was acting crazy.

The woman was attempting to get away from him in her vehicle at New Copeland Road and Loop 323 in the parking lot, according to the news release.

The man was shouting at her that he was going to kill her and deliberately backed his vehicle into her vehicle with her inside.

The man then fled the area in his vehicle and traffic officers spotted him at Paluxy Drive and Loop 323.

He pulled into Hobby Lobby parking lot, exited his vehicle with a knife and shouted at officers to kill him, according to the news release.

Officers on scene gave him several verbal commands to drop the knife, but the man did not comply and officers shot him with a less lethal shotgun beanbag twice.

Cowart has a criminal history dating back to 2000, according to Smith County judicial records.
