Tyler Firefighters work to extinguish a fire that engulfed a vacant house about 8 a.m. in the 1600 block of Owens Street Monday, Jan. 8, 2018.

Thick, black smoke could be seen coming from a neighborhood off of Gentry Parkway Monday morning.

The Tyler Fire Department spent about two hours putting out a fire that engulfed a house in the 1600 block of Owens Avenue.

District Chief David Admire said the fire started in the vacant house shortly before 8 a.m. and firefighters do not yet know a cause.

Admire said he spoke to the property owner who confirmed nobody was living in the structure and it has been vacant for many years.

Neither electrical nor gas were hooked up to the building, according to the fire department.
