Sunday afternoon in East Texas featured snowball fights and building snowmen. And with snow also comes possible closures and delays at schools and businesses in addition to exercising caution on the roadways.

Some businesses closed their doors due to the inclement weather, while others closed earlier or will open later than normal. Brookshire’s stores closed at 7 p.m. Sunday and will close at regular business hours Monday.

Check with businesses by phone before going to make sure the establishment is open.

Meals on Wheels East Texas will not deliver meals on Monday. The organization delivers meals to seniors in need across Smith, Wood, Gregg, Van Zandt, Henderson and Upshur counties.

“The safety of our drivers, volunteers and staff is priority,” the nonprofit said in a statement. “All of our Meals on Wheels clients received a five-day shelf stable meal box in December to be consumed in emergency situations, such as inclement weather. Since we serve many rural areas, we feel it is wise to halt operations and deliveries on Monday.”

All UT Health East Texas Physicians clinics will delay their openings on Monday until noon. This delay includes the COVID-19 vaccine clinics at UT Health North Campus Tyler, 11937 U.S. Highway 271.

People with an appointment before noon for the vaccine will be rescheduled for next Monday. UT Health East Texas Olympic Center in Tyler will open at 8 a.m. Monday, while other olympic centers will open at 10 a.m.

Due to inclement weather, Christus Trinity Clinics in Tyler, Lindale, Mineola, Quitman, Sulphur Springs, Emory, Jacksonville, Palestine, Canton and Athens will all open at 10 a.m. Monday.

Bethesda Health Clinic in Tyler is closed Monday as well due to the weather.

As snow levels increased, the Tyler Police Department asked people to use caution while they drive, such as reducing their speed especially on bridges and outlying bridges.

Police suggested avoiding the following areas due to snow: West Martin Luther King Boulevard from Gentry Parkway to Glenwood Boulevard, the 1200 block of South Glenwood Boulevard, the North Beckham Avenue overpass, North Parkdale Drive and Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, East Elm Street and North Broadway Avenue, Shiloh Road and Inverness Drive, Shiloh Road and Pine Knoll Drive, East Grade Boulevard and Paluxy Drive, North Beckham Avenue from Gentry Parkway to UT Health East Texas, Fifth Street and Loop 323, Grande Boulevard and South Broadway Avenue, South Vine Avenue and West First Street and Earl Campbell Parkway and Frankston Highway.

The city of Tyler streets team applied aggregate and de-icer material to the roadways.

Smith County offices will delay their openings Monday until at least 10 a.m. due to the weather.

“I have assessed the weather situation this evening and believe it prudent to delay the start of business at all county facilities tomorrow, Monday, January 11, 2021,” Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran said. “Certain road conditions presently are hazardous to travel on, so we are asking our employees and the public to wait until road conditions improve before they travel to county facilities. County offices will open at 10 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.”

Moran said he will reassess the weather conditions on Monday to see if further delays are needed.

Smith County facilities having a delayed start include:

  • Smith County Courthouse
  • Smith County Annex Building
  • Cotton Belt Building
  • Road and Bridge
  • Animal Control and Shelter
  • Elections Administration Office
  • Veteran Services Office
  • Facility Services Office

The city of Tyler is also delaying its office openings until 10 a.m. Monday due to the weather. The city is encouraging people to stay indoors due to snowy road conditions.

Tyler Transit will delay bus service until 10 a.m. Monday and the city’s trash service will start at 10 a.m. Monday.
