Smith County auction includes cars, saddles, furniture and church pews

Smith County is auctioning off a dozen cars in an online sale.

The listing includes former police vehicles as well as vehicles seized during drug-related crimes.

The county's auction also includes some miscellaneous items such as saddles and saddlebags, office furniture and church pews.

"If you haven't gotten your Valentine's Day gift, the county is happy to help you out with that situation," County Judge Nathaniel Moran joked before the Smith County Commissioners Court approved selling the items Tuesday.

Smith County has 19 separate listings on www.govdeals.com. The bidding will open Wednesday and run through 5 p.m. March 8, according to the county.

The auction listings can be found by searching for "Smith County" in the search window at the top right of the homepage. The website is similar to eBay, with registered users setting maximum and minimum bids.

State law allows the county three main ways to get rid of unwanted items. It can either donate items to another government entity, to a nonprofit agency within the county or sell them in an auction. If the item doesn't sell, it can be donated or thrown away.

All auction items are sold as is. There are no warranties or returns.

All payments must be made online through wire transfer, PayPal or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover). PayPal and credit card purchases are limited to less than $5,000 and all payments must be made online. The sale is subject to sales tax.

Bidders may inspect auction items prior to bidding, but would need to coordinate with purchasing department employee Jordan Norris by emailing jnorris@smith-county.com.

The county also approved donating surplus desks to Habitat For Humanity. Purchasing Director Kim Gould said those were included in a previous auction but did not sell.
