The Smith County Sheriff's Office is continuing to work against credit card skimmer devices illegally placed on gas pumps.

In addition to checking gas pumps throughout the county, fraud detectives from the sheriff's office are placing decals on numerous gas pumps throughout Smith County This effort is to remind the public about this type of credit card fraud and to caution any would-be perpetrators.

This problem requires the attention of all residents and gas station owners, according to the sheriff's office.

Local authorities began investigating gas skimmers in April after a spike in credit card accounts being stolen through the use of the skimmers.

The investigation revealed more than 15 gas stations in Tyler and 15 other stations in Smith County falling victim to credit card skimmers being placed on gas pumps.
