Stephen F. Austin State University's Alumni Association will have an education-focused event in Tyler this week.

During the Alumni Lunch and Learn event on Wednesday, Dr. Kimberly Childs will speak about improving educational opportunities that lead to careers in science, technology and math, according to an SFA news release.

The meeting is at noon Wednesday at Traditions Restaurant, 6205 S. Broadway Ave. A lunch buffet is available for purchase.

Dr. Childs is dean of SFA's College of Sciences and Mathematics and executive director of the university's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Center, according to the news release.

The STEM Research and Learning Center's primary goal is to increase the number of students who are interested in and academically prepared for STEM careers.

The center works to bring about new ideas in STEM university education, support student mentoring during educational transition periods, guide teacher induction during their first years in the classroom, and empower teachers to help transform their districts.

"These endeavors will directly address the pressing demand for a technologically advanced workforce by increasing STEM knowledge, capacity and expertise," Dr. Childs said, according to the news release.
