A Brushy Creek church community will have a send off Sunday for a couple who have been long-time members of Pisgah Baptist Church.
Friends and neighbors will gather to bid farewell to Ruth and Carl Dearing at the church at 3 p.m.
Ruth Dearing’s family settled in Brushy Creek in the late 19th century. Her parents, Edgar and Essie Ellen Birdwell, operated a large tomato farm. Edgar Birdwell served as a deacon at the church for 45 years.
Ruth Dearing remembers her baptism in a local lake, walking to Brushy Creek Elementary School with her five siblings and picking lots of tomatoes.
She met and married Carl Dearing in Dallas in 1949. He taught air conditioning installation to the military, while she sold Bibles door to door. She later sold real estate and maintained a license for 52 years.
Pisgah Baptist Church, established in 1854, is located across from the Brushy Creek Arbor on Farm to Market 837.
Ruth and Carl Dearing are moving to Corpus Christi to be closer to family.
