Palestine woman dies after three-car accident


PALESTINE, Texas– At 4:01 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016, members of the Palestine Police Department, Palestine Fire Department and Palestine Regional Medical Center EMS responded to a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and North Loop 256. According to witnesses, a 2010 Nissan Frontier operated by Bonita Salter, 72, Palestine, was traveling north on North Loop 256 approaching the intersection of Martin Luther King and N. Loop 256.

The Nissan reportedly entered the intersection, attempting to make a left turn onto MLK with an unprotected green traffic light. The Nissan reportedly failed to yield the right of way by turning in front of an oncoming 2001 Ford F-350 with a trailer, traveling south on N. Loop 256. After being the collision, the Nissan came to rest in the ditch off of the roadway.

The Ford, driven by Geronimo Avila, 61, Houston, then struck a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado that was sitting at a red light on Martin Luther King, on the west side of the Loop. The Chevrolet and Ford came to rest in the grass next to the roadway. Mirilyn Allen, 66, Palestine, was the driver of the truck.

Salter and Allen were both transported to the Palestine Regional Medical Center ER. Salter died as a result of injuries while Allen sustained non-life threatening injuries. Avila and passenger of the Ford, 42-year-old Jorge Salinas, were uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation by the Palestine Police Department.
