Orr Elementary School is getting its students into shape in order to promote learning with its Fitness Fridays program.

Principal Tara Hinton created the program last school year, and so far, it has been a big success.

“We want to help build that groundwork for strength, coordination and confidence for a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

Hinton said teachers, students and even parents look forward to the event each month.

“We’re trying to promote being active together, so they know they can do them at home with their parents,” she said. “We incorporate dance, walking, stretching, yoga, aerobics and different ways that they can burn more calories and have fun.”

Hinton also likes to give the event seasonal themes. Last October, the students learned the choreography to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller." She said they would likely spend a few minutes doing a refresher of the dance this month.

The next Fitness Friday is set for Oct. 28. Parents are welcome to join their students in getting fit as a family.
