Tyler Mayor Martin Heines proclaimed Wednesday as Mayfair Day to coincide with the dedication of the new subject marker placed outside of the historic Mayfair Building in Tyler.
The Mayfair Building was constructed in the late 1920s and is housed on the East Texas State Fairgrounds. The multipurpose venue was commonly used as a concert hall, and many famous artists played on its stage, such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Elvis.
During the dedication celebration Wednesday afternoon, Matt Magill, Megan Magill and Ronnie "The Mouse" Weiss took the stage to perform the Johnny Cash and June Carter song, "Jackson," among others.
In addition to the new historical marker, the building may soon get a rebirth, as the nonprofit group, Friends of the Mayfair are raising money to renovate the building.
"Buildings like this matter, not just the structure, but the heart and soul of what occurred in them," Mayor Heines said. "We are going to support this organization going forward to remodel this venue and bring it back to life."
