LINDALE (KYTX) - As investigators continue digging through evidence in a Lindale apartment fire, new details are surfacing about the woman they say is responsible for setting the Scenic Hills apartments on fire over the weekend.

"It's just something that one person can do such a thing and change so many people's lives," said Amy Bateman, Scenic Hills Apartment manager.

That's all Sandy Bateman had to say after finding out one of her tenants was arrested for allegedly setting fire to her apartment complex.

The fire, that started around 1 a.m. Sunday morning burned eight apartments… leaving eight families displaced. Bateman has managed Scenic Hills for 34 years and says she's never had any trouble until now.

"It's sad," she said.

Arrest records show Tiffany Lashay Collins was arrested shortly after the fire and charged with first degree felony arson.

According to the affidavit, when first responders arrived on scene she told them, "I burned the m---r down."

After more questioning, Collins told firefighters she set one of the apartments on fire. When asked how, she then said multiple times..."I burned the b--h down."

Many questions left unanswered, including why.

For the eight families left homeless, those questions are less important than the bigger concern, which is where they'll live.

"The only thing we can do is pray that they come and bounce back from this," said Jason Cloud, a Scenic Hills resident.

Investigators aren't sure what led Collins to set her apartment on fire.

Collins remains in the Smith County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
