The Tyler unit of the NAACP presented a $1,500 scholarship to a student of Tyler Junior College on Tuesday, and TJC President Mike Metke announced that the award was being matched by TJC.

“We have a proud partnership with the local NAACP unit,” Metke said. “We are glad to assist in this presentation and to further the education of an outstanding student.”

The recipient, Kayla McKenzie, is a 2016 graduate of John Tyler High School, who graduated ninth in her class.

McKenzie began taking dual credit courses at TJC in 2013 and will enter TJC as a full-time student as a sophomore. She plans to complete an associate degree in athletic training and transfer to The University of Texas in Austin.

“My ultimate goal is to be a trainer for an NBA basketball team,” she said.

Board members of the NAACP Unit 6232 and family members joined in the celebration of the scholarship.
