Two days remain in the Shine Your Light fundraising campaign benefitting area nonprofit organizations.
Twelve donors contributed $3,500 to the campaign Monday, bringing the community and matching donor total to $151,685.
This year’s matching donors pledged a total of $72,500 to launch the campaign and challenge community members to give. Matching donors include Barbara and Billy Bass, Harold and Rosemary Beaird Fund, Niblack Charitable Fund, Herb and Melvina Buie, Clements Family Foundation, Tyler Morning Telegraph, Michelle and Martin Heines, Citizens 1st Bank, Southside Bank, Your Philanthropy in honor of YP Collaborative and an anonymous donor.
So far, residents have given $79,185.
“Shine Your Light speaks a lot about the citizens of Tyler and the way they give,” Mayor Heines said. “Tyler is a very giving community. The nonprofits do the yeomen’s work to provide social services here, and this is a great way to support those efforts.”
The eight nonprofit organizations selected as this year’s Shine Your Light recipients include East Texas Food Bank, The Salvation Army, People Attempting to Help (PATH), Meals On Wheels Ministry, the Samaritan Counseling Center, Gateway to Hope, Boys and Girls Club of East Texas Gospel Village and The Hospice of East Texas WINGS Program for Bereaved Children.
Heines said its best for the private sector to handle social service needs rather than rely on government. He said he’s been a longtime supporter of many nonprofits benefitting from Shine Your Light.
“It’s a great list,” he said of this year’s recipients.
Shine Your Light has raised more than $1 million for 19 area nonprofits during the five prior fundraising campaigns.
The campaign continues through Wednesday. Donations can be made online by going to TylerPaper.com and clicking on the Shine Your Light button or by mail by sending a check payable to ETCF Shine Your Light, 315 N. Broadway Ave. Suite 210, Tyler, Texas 75702.
