This week, going for the green has more than one meaning.
With dollar signs in their eyes and a jackpot on the brain, golfers began qualifying on Monday in the 33rd annual UT Tyler Southside Bank Patriot Million Dollar Hole-In-One event.
The contest offers amateur golfers age 18 and older the opportunity to compete for a chance to win $1 million. Each shot during the preliminary daily rounds is $1. Daily qualifiers are those who hit a hole-in-one, as well as those who hit closest to the hole during the daily qualifying rounds.
The qualifying site is at The University of Texas at Tyler practice soccer field, 3900 University Blvd., Tyler, 75799.
Qualifying is 4 to 8 p.m. each day.
Friday will feature extended hours with “Friday Night Lights” from 7 to 11 p.m. The tee box and green will be well lit for players and will feature one additional qualifier each hour.
Saturday's qualifying is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The finals are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Hollytree Country Club.
On Sunday, there will be three holes for prizes. The grand prize is $1 million from Southside Bank. The vehicle prize is from Patterson Tyler Dodge Ram, while the cash prize is $25,000 from KLTV.
Runner-up prizes include tickets to a getaway at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, courtesy of KLTV. It is valued at $800. Second runner-up is a round of golf for four and cart at Hollytree (value: $275). Also, the first person placing a ball inside 2 feet of the million dollar pin wins $500.
The UT Tyler Patriot Million Dollar Hole-In-One event has provided scholarship opportunities for dozens of current and past UT Tyler students for more than 30 years. To date, more than $2 million has been raised for the UT Tyler Patriot Endowed Scholarship fund for deserving UT Tyler students. Last year's contest and the Patriot Golf Classic raised more than $110,000.
The UT Tyler Patriot organization volunteers its time and resources to ensure the success of the Patriot Hole-In-One contest.
