A Marshall woman died Sunday from injuries she sustained after hitting a concrete barrier while trying to avoid a rear-end collision with other cars stopped at a traffic light on U.S. Highway 271 in Smith County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The DPS said Sherri Estelle Oney, 33, was northbound on US 271 in a 2005 Volvo XC90 about 3.5 miles southeast of Winona.

A preliminary crash investigation showed Oney swerved to the side of the road and hit a concrete barrier while trying to avoid crashing into cars that were slowing down to stop at a traffic light at about 2:19 p.m., according to the DPS.

The DPS said Oney was taken to UT Health-Tyler, where she was later pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation.
