7,000 marijuana plants found in Upshur County

More than 7,000 marijuana plants were found Friday in Upshur County. This is at least the eighth marijuana field found in East Texas in recent weeks.

More than 7,000 marijuana plants were found Friday in Upshur County about eight miles north of Gilmer off Texas Highway 155.

Investigator Freddie Fitzgerald with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office said the growing area spanned about 30 acres of private property. The landowner lives elsewhere and was unaware of the field.

Law enforcement was tipped off to the location. Although there was a camp set up on the property, no one was there when they arrived, Fitzgerald said.

It took about six hours to photograph and document the evidence, remove the plants, count them and stack them for destruction.

Fitzgerald did not have information about the street value of the marijuana, but did say it appeared to be ready for harvesting.

This is at least the eighth marijuana field found in East Texas in the past few months.
