The Smith County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent homicide after a body was discovered early Sunday morning in a convenience store parking lot.
Deputies were dispatched to the store at 11812 Texas Highway 64 West at 2:08 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
Upon the arrival of a patrol supervisor and deputies, a man was found dead inside a parked vehicle in front of the store, according to the news release.
The victim had sustained an apparent gunshot wound. The sheriff's office said the suspect left the scene before deputies arrived and witnesses were immediately contacted and the crime scene was secured.
Smith County sheriff’s investigators and the crime scene unit were called to the location, according to the news release.
Detectives were interviewing witnesses and the crime scene investigators continued Sunday to process evidence at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.
The department said the investigation is ongoing and that information about a possible suspect will not be disseminated at this time. The name of the victim is also being withheld pending notification of family members.
Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Jon Johnson arrived at the scene for the inquest and an autopsy was ordered. The victim was taken to Forensic Medical in Tyler for an autopsy.
