Christian Homes and Family Services will host the Champion for Children dinner with guest speaker Leigh Anne Tuohy at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Green Acres Baptist Church CrossWalk center.
Former Smith County Commissioner Bill Wallis will be honored for his contributions to the organization. He is credited with fundraising that resulted in the adoption of 600 children.
Wallis led Christian Homes’ advancement efforts in East Texas. Most notably, Wallis spear-headed the effort to build the ministry’s new office and family services center on Hollytree Drive, which opened in 2013. As a result, the ministry increased the size of its staff and expanded its service and training opportunities for foster families.
Before joining the foster care and adoption ministry, Wallis had careers in the electric utility industry and owned communications businesses and radio stations. In 1988, Wallis was elected to the Smith County Commissioners Court, Precinct 1 and served eight years.
Funds raised at the dinner will establish the Bill and Georgia Wallis Adoption Fund, which will help couples with financial assistance needed to adopt.
Sandra Bullock portrayed Leigh Anne Tuohy in the film “The Blindside.” Since the movie premiered, Mrs. Tuohy has used her fame to advocate for the disadvantaged.
