Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding an altercation Monday that led to the death of one brother and the arrest of another.
About 6:30 a.m. Monday, Rusk County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 15000 block of County Road 3167 in Mount Enterprise, according to a news release.
The person who reported the incident indicated that the two brothers were involved in an altercation, which later left one of the men dead, the release states.
Once authorities arrived on scene, 24-year-old Brian Jerome Townsend, of Mount Enterprise, was arrested in connection with the death of his brother, 32-year-old Alonzo Lewis, and booked in the Rusk County Jail on a first-degree murder charge. His bond was set at $500,000.
Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Price said authorities have visited with Townsend and are trying to determine the series of events that occurred that day.
"There were other people in the home at the time," he said. "We're trying to piece everything together. We do know there was some type of altercation that started and escalated."
In the meantime, Price said, authorities have recovered the firearm they believe was used in the incident and are waiting on autopsy results.
The Rusk County Sheriff's Office is being assisted by the Rusk County District Attorney's Office and Texas Rangers.
