Series of free diabetes education programs Thursdays at the library

 

The first of six free classes in the Diabetes Education Empowerment Program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, in the Taylor Auditorium of the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College Ave.

Classes are sponsored by the Northeast Texas Center for Rural Community Health at UT Health Northeast. Participants will learn about diabetes risk factors and complications, as well as how to manage diabetes through better nutrition and physical activity. Topics include how to use a glucose meter correctly, how to access community resources, and how to build a partnership with their diabetes healthcare team. The program is based on national diabetes care and self-management recommendations and guidelines. The remaining five classes will take place at the same time on the following Thursdays: April 24, May 1, May 8, May 15, and May 22.

Mental Health Awareness Day to ‘Stamp Out Stigma'

The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a health fair from 8:30 a.m. to noon May 3 to promote awareness and information about mental health services in the area. It will be held at Shiloh Road Church of Christ, 1801 Shiloh Road. Organizers of the event are seeking sponsorships and those interested in obtaining a booth. ETMC to hold Neuroscience Symposium

The ETMC Neurological Institute will hold the annual Ronald J. Donaldson Neuroscience Symposium for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 25, at the ETMC Pavilion in Tyler.

This educational activity is accredited by the Texas Medical Association and Texas Nurses Association to provide continuing medical education credits.

Presentations will include diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, advances in neuro-rehabilitation, ALS and new therapies, headaches, neurology and palliative care and more.

The symposium is named in honor of Donaldson, founder of Tyler Neurosurgical Associates, in association with ETMC.

ETMC offers support groups for neurological patients

The East Texas Medical Center Neurological Institute now offers several free support groups led by trained professionals to help patients manage their disease.

Early Onset Parkinson's Group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. at the ETMC Pavilion, 801 Clinic Drive. Meeting dates are May 15, July 17, Sept. 18 and Nov. 20. This group is intended for active patients with Parkinson's. Friends and spouses may also attend.

Deep Brain Stimulation Interest Group will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Oct. 8.

This group is for patients, patients interested in DBS and caregivers.

Essential Tremor Group will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 10, Sept. 9 and Dec. 9. This group is for essential tremor patients and caregivers.

The Parkinson's Group will meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on April 24, July 24 and Oct. 23. This group is for Parkinson's patients and caregivers.

All meetings are held in the ETMC Pavilion, 801 Clinic Drive. Parking is available next to the building.
