A 60-year-old North Texas woman died after she was hit by a semitrailer when she chased a dog into traffic on U.S. Highway 69.

On Sunday, Katherine Ann Petty, of Garland, ran into the lanes of traffic, 3.5 miles north of Rusk, in Cherokee County, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release.

A 41-year-old Lufkin man was northbound on U.S. 69 in the inside lane in a 2011 Peterbilt truck tractor towing a semitrailer and struck the woman. She was taken to UT Health Tyler, where she later died.

DPS troopers responded to the wreck about 3:15 p.m. Sunday. The crash remained under investigation Monday.
