The East Texas Big Event, a large annual community service event in Tyler, has been selected as a finalist for the Texas Downtown Association 2019 President’s Awards Program.
The event is nominated in the “Spirit of Downtown” category. East Texas Big Event is a partnership between the University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler Junior College and the city of Tyler. This year’s event in April focused on service projects that would have an impact on downtown Tyler, according to a city of Tyler news release.
The revitalization projects included the Smith County Historical Society, Liberty Hall and others. The program is meant to engage college students in community service and become involved in the community, according to the news release.
Amber Rojas-Varona, city of Tyler Main Street director, expressed excitement over the Big Event being a finalist.
“We are thrilled to have this amazing event selected as a finalist for the 2019 Spirit of Downtown Award,” she said. “This event demonstrated the vision we have for not just our downtown, but our community.”
The Texas Downtown Association has been in existence since 1985.
Award winners will be announced Oct. 30 at the awards gala as a part of the 2019 Texas Downtown Conference in Georgetown.
