Two East Texas families took home the prizes in M. Roberts Digital’s inaugural First Day of School Photo Contest.
Stephanie Barnes, of Whitehouse, and her son Trevor Green, 12, won first-place honors.
Barnes had taken a group picture of her children when Trevor noticed their 3-year-old German shepherd, Tank, had decided it was time for a bathroom break.
Trevor ran over to the tree and smiled for a photo with Tank in the background taking care of his business.
Barnes submitted the photo with the caption, “Well ... Someone is NOT happy about the first day of school! Tank had to put in his #2 cents.”
Amber Mettlen and Jarrod McLarey, of Tyler, took home the second- and third-place prizes. Mettlen and McLarey submitted a photo of their son, Levi McLarey, 9, on his first day of fourth grade.
Mettlen said the family was looking up different photo ideas and Levi liked the idea of posing for a mugshot with a sign like a convict. Mettlen said the irony is that Levi actually really loves school.
Mettlen also won the third-place prize for a photo of her sons Donovan Fitzpatrick, 8, and Dominik Fitzpatrick, 6. The boys, who are in second and first grades, respectively, are pictured smiling as they wait for the bus. Mettlen said they were very excited.
Sixteen photos were entered into this year’s photo contest and some 205 votes were cast. The first place winner received $200, followed by $100 for second place and $50 for third place.
