SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Smith County District Attorney's office confirmed late Monday that Carl Crabtree of Bullard had been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter for his alleged responsibility in the wreck that killed two people last Wednesday.
The wreck happened south of Tyler on Old Jacksonville Highway in the rain just after dark. Several drivers who were in the area at the time told CBS 19 they had been worried after seeing Crabtree's vehicle moving erratically prior to the crash. They suspected he had been drinking.
The wreck killed Dana Regester, who worked at the Brook Hill School in Bullard, and an international student from the school named Pasha Zapolsky.
Crabtree was charged twice in 2009 for driving while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty in both cases.
District Attorney Matt Bingham said Crabtree had been taken into custody upon his release from the East Texas Medical Center Monday, and that more charges might be forthcoming
