Two people were killed and another person was injured in a shooting in Van Zandt County.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a call for assistance from the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office on County Road 4710 and Farm-to-Market Road 773, south of Ben Wheeler, according to a news release from the DPS.

The DPS said troopers were going to the disturbance call overnight Wednesday around midnight when several 911 calls came in indicating someone at the residence had been shot.

Law enforcement officers saw a person lying on the ground near the driveway when they arrived at the scene, according to the DPS.

Officers were shot at by a suspect near the house, according to the DPS.

The suspect retreated behind the house when the officers returned fire, according to the news release.

The DPS said the suspect was found dead near the house and two others were shot prior to law enforcement's arrival.

A man and a woman were taken to Christus Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler, where the man later died and the woman's condition is not known, according to the DPS.

The DPS said the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
