The community is invited to give blood during Tyler Junior College's fourth annual 50-Gallon Challenge blood drive.

The five-day blood drive challenges students and the community to collectively give 50 gallons of life-saving blood. In 2014, blood donors surpassed the goal and collected 52 gallons; this translates to 1,200 lives saved.

The blood drive will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the following campus locations:

n Apache rooms, first floor, Rogers Student Center

n Carter BloodCar bus in the Pirtle Tech Parking Lot

nTyler Junior College West campus (Wednesday only)

Carter BloodCare must see at least 1,000 donors a day to maintain the community blood supply, officials said in a news release.

All donors will receive a special event T-shirt from TJC and be entered to win prizes from local vendors. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Jacque Decker at 903-504-0812.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent's consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they donate.

Officials recommend eating a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information about donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call Carter BloodCare at 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
