WINONA — John Smith has been the Smith County Precinct 4 constable since being elected in 2006 following the death of former constable Dale Geddie, who was shot and killed while answering a domestic dispute call.
Smith, a former Smith County Sheriff's deputy, was assigned the position, then won a special election and ran unopposed in 2008 and 2012.
"Since I love being y'alls constable so much and I will be asking to be re-elected for another four-year term to start Jan. 1, we are planning a fundraiser on my birthday, Jan. 19," he wrote on his Facebook page.
Smith said there was never any doubt about running for re-election and he hopes he has gained the constituents' trust and they will once again elect him to office.
"I knew I was going to run and I have never had a fund-raiser so I thought we would do one. I haven't had an opponent yet, but one never knows," he said.
Smith said since he took office, daytime crimes in his precinct have fallen.
"I've increased the staff by two deputies, and I think we have decreased the crime stats in Precinct 4, because we are visible and are out chasing the bad guys. We are out looking for the thieves and burglars," he said.
Smith said anyone wanting to attend the event — featuring a chili dinner and live auction by former Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith — can call his office or send him a message asking for an invitation.
