Four Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Catholic School seniors have been named national merit scholars for their achievements on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Valerie Macedo and Erik Amaro-Driedger were recognized as National Merit Hispanic Scholars. Alexander Bonachea and Giancarlo Petosa were recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars, according to a statement from the school.
The National Hispanic Recognition Program honors 5,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors every year from the more than 400,000 who take the PSAT/NMSQT test. Selection is based on the test score and the qualifying GPA, according to the information.
National Merit Commended Scholars are named to the list because of their score on the qualifying test. Of the 1.5 million students who take the test, only 3.3 percent reach the commended scholars list, according to the statement.
