BIG SANDY -- A man remained at large late Friday afternoon after the First National Bank on U.S. 80 was robbed, said police.

The man, who was wearing a ski mask, abandoned his stolen getaway vehicle at a nearby car wash on U.S. 80 and got into a car with a female driver, said an officer who declined to give his name because he was unsure he was authorized to release information.

The couple was westbound on 80 in a burgundy BMW 2-door with a black felt top, but officers do not yet have a license number, the officer said. An eyewitness saw the suspect get in the car with the woman, he said.

The officer said he believed the robbery was armed, but that he had no physical description of the bandit. Nobody was hurt in the incident, which occurred about 2 p.m., he said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is in charge of the case since the robbery is a federal crime, was determining the amount of money taken, the officer said.

The abandoned car had been stolen Friday morning in Tyler, he said.
