The American Indian Cultural Society will host the annual Battle of the Neches memorial ceremony on Saturday to honor those who died in the engagement in the Cherokee War on July 16, 1839.
People are expected to start gathering about 2 p.m. to visit at the site of the battle about 12 miles west of Tyler on Van Zandt County Road 4923 off Texas Highway 64. A program is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and overnight camping will be permitted with prior reservation.
Indian fry bread, Indian tacos, cold drinks, water, hot dogs, chips and crafts will be sold to help cover the cost of maintaining the site.
The ceremony will commemorate the Battle of the Neches in which Texas Cherokees and 12 associated Indian tribal bands were defeated by Texas Army soldiers.
