Allen B. West to headline 240th Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Tyler Saturday

Former Congressman and retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Allen West

The Marine Corps League will celebrate the Marine Corps’ 240th birthday with a ball this Saturday at Cascades Country Club Ballroom, 4511 Briarwood Drive in Tyler.

Former Congressman and retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Allen B. West will be the guest speaker.

West served in several combat zones, including Operation Desert Storm, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was a Battalion Commander in the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, and later in Afghanistan during a 22-year military career, according to his website profile. He received honors, including a Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals and a Valorous Unit Award. In 1993 he was named the US Army ROTC Instructor of the Year.

He has been a vocal supporter of military troops and veterans returning from combat.

The event will include dinner and a speech by West, who spent three years assigned to the 2nd Marine Division.

The Elegant Few will provide musical entertainment after the ceremony in the main ballroom. A jazz lounge will also be available.

The bar accepts cash and credit cards.

A silent auction will benefit Toys for Tots.

Doors open for a social hour in the Cascades dining area at 4:30 p.m. The birthday ceremony begins at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person. Reserved tables for eight are $400. Reserved tables for 10 are $500.

A special “sponsors event” will be held at Liberty Hall, 110 W. Erwin St. from 1-2:30 p.m. West will entertain questions from the audience.

Gentlemen are asked to formally for the ball, including black tie, military uniforms or suit and tie. Ladies are asked to wear evening or cocktail dresses or military uniforms.
