A family trip to Lake Tyler Tuesday evening became a life-saving mission for one Tyler man.

Brian Ballard was on a tubing trip when he came across a baby deer that appeared to be dead and fully submerged.

Ballard got the deer onto his boat and started compressing its sides. Someone on a nearby boat, Ashton Byrd, jumped over to help Ballard.

They then blew into the deer’s mouth and nose, and after a couple minutes the fawn stood up. Ballard said Byrd then took the deer to a wildlife rehabilitation organization.

“It was pretty amazing,” Ballard said. “It was one of the strangest things to happen to me at the lake.”

Ballard’s wife Liz shared the video on Facebook with a caption of “God is good!”

I came to the Tyler Morning Telegraph in September 2019. I report on crime, courts, breaking news and various events in Tyler and East Texas.
