Jakes Tyler, the upscale downtown restaurant, has closed its doors. Staff members were told on Tuesday.

Owner Kamla Utz confirmed this, writing in an email response, "We have closed our daily operations temporarily in order to facilitate a new concept."

Jakes opened at 111 E. Erwin St. with six owners in 1997, but closed within a year. Rick Eltife, owner of Rick's on the Square, remodeled the building and re-opened the restaurant in 1999. He sold it to Alan and Kamla Utz in 2008.

The Utz family has operated the restaurant since, even opening a popular rooftop lounge, The Chaveta.
