Remember, "The Twist," that "can't get it out of your head" song by Chubby Checker in the '60s that had everyone dancing like crazy.

Come on, baby, let's do the twist

Come on, baby, let's do the twist

Take me by my little hand and go like this

Yeah, twist, baby, baby

Twist, ooh yeah, just like this

Come on, little miss, and do the twist

My hips are beginning to gyrate just thinking about it.

Organizers of an upcoming charity fundraiser want East Texans — lots of East Texans — to get their hips a twisting. In fact, they want so much twisting that it sets a world record.

The attempt at breaking the record for the most people doing the Twist at the same time will take place during a Sock Hop set for May 31 at Harvey Convention Center in Tyler.

Proceeds from the dance will go to the Tyler Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary and the Sharon Shrine Temple. The event will also feature a car show and music by the popular '50s music band Vince Vance and the Valiants.

"Our goal is to have 1,710 people doing the twist dance at the same time to break the World Record and put Tyler, Texas, in the history books forever!" the announcement said.

Event organizers are seeking sponsorships. Sponsor packages range from $5,000 to $500 and include recognition at the dance and tickets to a private party with Vince Vance.

Admission tickets will range from $100 to $10.

The event is being organized by the Jose Feliciano Foundation based in Tyler. For information, go to the website,

The Sponsorship Committee is headed by Jim and Brenda Yates: 903-581-6810 or; and the event coordinators are Danny or Jackie Stroud: 903-881-9733 or

And in closing, let's never forget the words of Chubby Checker.

Come on, baby, let's do the twist.
