The Literacy Council of Tyler recognized its donors and presented its Circle of Honor Award to the Tyler Morning Telegraph on Jan. 18 at Willow Brook Country Club in recognition of the company and the Clyde family’s longtime support of the organization.
Since 1991, the Tyler Morning Telegraph has been the lead sponsor of the Literacy Council’s Spelling Bee, as well as an active participant and winner in the competition.
The council also recognized the success of Maria Araujo and her brother, Juan, who could not speak English when they came from Mexico.
Ms. Araujo took night English classes through the Literacy Council, earned a college degree and is now a registered nurse. Juan Araujo also learned English and is an engineering student at Tyler Junior College, with plans of earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Literacy Council President Nancy Crawford also remembered GED Supervisor Rick Swain, who died suddenly on Dec. 31.
