If you'd like to donate to local causes while also working off Thursday's dinner, the 13th Annual Tyler Turkey Trot 5k and Kids Fun Run may be a perfect solution.
Presented by Brookshire's and Premier CrossFit, the event set on Thanksgiving Day at Racquet and Jog has become a popular community event.
Race organizers Michelle and Cune Peña aim to get people active and inspire family togetherness. They will donate money raised from the race to Meals on Wheels and Refuge of Light.
"We are honored to give back to two organizations that do so much for others in our community," Mrs. Peña said. "Meals on Wheels is a perfect charity to support, especially during Thanksgiving, and Refuge of Light is an organization that provides a safe haven for victims of sex trafficking in the U.S."
Event officials expect this year race to be the largest yet.
"We expect over 2,000 runners this year and are excited to see the event grow," Mrs. Pena said. "We encourage everyone in Tyler to bring their families and friends and come join us to run or walk a few miles before we dig into the Thanksgiving meal."
The 5K is chip-timed and the top three overall male and female winners will win awards, as well as age group winners. The Kids' Fun Run is for children ages 12 and under. All kids receive a shirt and medal for participating.
The route includes Old Bullard Road, Rice Road and Rieck Road.
The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Kids' Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m. Late registration will continue at Racquet and Jog until race morning.
