Northeast Texas Public Health District's chief executive officer, George Roberts now leads a new initiative implemented to support chronically underfunded segments of the nation's public health system.
He will serve as board chair of the Foundation for the Public's Health, which was launched July 7 at the National Association of County and City Health Officials' annual conference.
"The premise is to start raising support of NACCHO and health departments throughout the United States," Roberts said. "Some of us are so dependent on government funding, so the idea is to help health departments start raising philanthropic dollars."
Roberts said fundraising targets might be companies, foundations and individuals who have an interest in public health.
The Foundation will serve about 2,800 county and city health departments, providing financial and consulting assistance to public health projects and educational opportunities in fund development.
Its mission is also to bring attention to the public health work being done in, and with, communities, schools, workplaces and health centers.
