Brookshire's holds Labor of Love blood drives
Two of the Tyler Brookshire's stores are holding Labor of Love blood drives from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at 2020 Roseland Blvd. and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at 100 Rice Road. Every blood drive participant will receive a free Sadler's Smokehouse Tailgate Ready Brisket, while supplies last.
For more than two decades, Brookshire Grocery Co. has supported the East Texas blood supply with blood drives, educating the community about blood donation and generously thanking blood donors.
The drive is a way to boost the blood supply for patients over the Labor Day weekend. Summer months, holidays and weekends are the most challenging times to maintain the community's blood supply, Carter BloodCare officials said. They said blood supply has hovered at a much-less-than-preferred level all summer.
Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for giving blood.
All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood. Donors are encouraged to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
Registration for mental health conference closes
Registration has closed for The Peace of Mind Conference: Standing Together For Mental Health because there is limited space. Organizers said they expected about 300 to attend, but have already signed up more than 700 people.
The highly anticipated conference will feature Kay Warren, wife of megachurch pastor Rick Warren, Amy Simpson, award-winning author of "Troubled Minds: Mental Illness and the Church's Mission," as well as psychology and psychiatry professionals.
The conference focuses on the intersection of mental illness and faith, and is designed to give families, individuals, and church leaders the tools to handle mental health issues. The free conference will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Green Acres CrossWalk Conference Center.
