On Friday Oct. 9, Tyler Newcomers Club celebrated their 65th anniversary at First Christian Church, 4202 S. Broadway. The Tyler Newcomers Club was organized in 1950 by the late Frances Martin and the assistance of 8 other members. Their objective was friendship and fellowship of new area residents ages 50 to mid-nineties. At one time, the club has as many as 450 members and met twice a month.

Tyler Newcomers Club meets monthly on the 2nd Friday of the month for games, cards, Maj Jongg, fellowship, lunch and entertaining programs and has 225 members. This particular day was devoted for the reason of the club, sharing memories and creating new friendships. As members walked into the large auditorium they were greeted with a Tea Table hosted by Diane Roworth and Judy Shaffstall. Assorted hot teas, scones, and lavender cookies were displayed in 3 tiered crystal and silver platters. The menu was created by Chairman, Barbara Jones with assistance from her team; Marilyn Permenter, Barbara Dorsey, Margaret Murphy, Lila McDermod, Maureen Parkhill and Jan Collen. The menu included Tomato Herb Broth with Cheese Wafers, Sliced Turkey, Egg Salad, Chicken Salad, Variety of Breads, Banana Bread Mini Muffins and Fresh Fruit with Dip. Dessert was a decorated 65th Anniversary Cake of Chocolate and Vanilla, that was individually sliced an hand delivered to the guests.

The 12 round tables were decorated with blue tablecloths, round mirrors held murano-style glass in the shape of purses, vintage gloves, pearls and/or other 1950's jewelry. Individual fans were designed for each guest denoting Newcomers' History on one side and the menu on the other. Pat Sarubbi, Betty Taylor, Margaret Stewart and Sandra Duggan used personal mementoes to create the tablescapes. Worth Holmes, husband of member Barbara Holmes entertained the ladies with songs of the past, played on his mothers' ukulele. Worth and Danny Dorsey, husband of member Barbara Dorsey, serenaded the ladies to a special song about newcomers.

"Our club is about learning more about the area, we have a wine group, a bridge group, and couples dine out night," said Susan Alberts, President of Newcomers. "I meet people at the gym and invite them as guests to come have a good time at our events."

Katherine Rohde, was honored as the member with the longest years, since 1986. Newcomers of Tyler welcomes all women who want to share friendships and fellowship in the Tyler area. The Executive Board for 2015-2016 is President, Susan Alberts, President Elect, Lorrie Auland, First Vice-President Judy Bayless, Second Vice-President Polly Sefcik, Secretary Kaye Dixon, Treasurer, Bev Knaus, Asst Treasurer Vicki Bates. All members had a wonderful time at the 65th Anniversary and enjoyed honoring Ms. Martin's vision to be continued today and in the future.
