Thousands are expected to attend an event featuring prayer and worship with musical guest Passion and speakers Andrew Palau and Josh White at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tyler's Green Acres Baptist Church, 1607 Troup Highway.

Organizers said the RE:NEW Gathering will be an evening of inspiration and unity as more than 220 local churches prepare for a season of outreach and service.

The event is being held as part of CityFest East Texas. The purpose of CityFest is to encourage greater collaboration among civic, corporate and religious leaders to better serve the city and proclaim the Gospel on a grand scale.

CityFest is also an effort to help churches in the region fill neighborhoods with outreach events and evangelical gatherings. It has several phases but will culminate with a large two-day festival in downtown Tyler on Oct. 5-6.

“We know our challenges, our concerns and our opportunities in this region,” Elam Swann of Swann’s Furniture & Design said in a news release. “Just think of what we can do and accomplish if we unite together as one church body.

“I’m particularly excited about working with the Palau Association because my son made a decision for Jesus at a Palau event in 1999,” he added. “I have seen what the team can do on a personal level and I want that experience for my East Texas neighbors.”
