For years, Kiki Shepard, who was born in Tyler as Chiquita Renee Shepard, was a the host of  “Showtime at the Apollo," a talent show that was held at New York's Apollo Theater.

The second season of the television series, featuring stars and up-and-coming artists, began on this date in 1989. 

Shepard began her career in show business as a dancer on Broadway and in the movie “Cotton Club.” She was a recurring character in the television series “Thunder in Paradise” and had guest roles on "A Different World," "Baywatch" and "NYPD Blue."
